P20+S

Grade Application
Tool steel P20 + S is suitable for mold production, improve the machining performance is required. Typical applications include support and injection mold, mold holders and zinc die casting mold. Heat Treatment
Heat treatment temperatures, including the rate of heat, cool, and soak times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component. Please consult your heat treatment provider for full guidance on heat treatment of tool steel P20+S.
Hardness
28-34 HRC P20+S is not suitable for polishing or applications where a fine finish is required.
Hardening
830-870°C, quenching in oil.
Thermal Properties
Thermal expansion: 12 x 10-6/ºC, 20-100°C
Forging Properties
Slowly heat P20+S to 1050°C，start forging, ensure forging temperature no lower than 930°C.
Stress Relieving
When dies made from P20+S are heavily machined, we recommend stabilizing the steel just before finish machining in order to relieve machining strains. Heat up to 460-500°C, soak well, and cool in the air.

Tempering
Heat to tempering temperature then cools in air.
Normalizing
900°C
Annealing
Heat to 710-740°C. Soak enough time, ensure heat thoroughly, then cool in the furnace slowly.
Density
Density: 7.85kg/cm3.
Machinability
60-65% of a 1% carbon steel
Welding
Steel AISI P20, of medium carbon content typically around 0,35 %, is supplied in the quenched and tempered condition with a hardness of 30-32 HRC. It has a long history of success in the industry of molds of injection of plastics, however with serious problems when repaired by welding, when it is indispensable a post-weld heat treatment for tempering and stress relieving, with negative effects on dimensional stability, the necessity of machining rework and lower productivity.
