OHNS

Grade Introduction:
OHNS steel is a general-purpose tool steel that is typically used in applications where alloy steels cannot provide sufficient hardness, strength, and wear resistance. Chemical composition of OHNS is Carbon 0.94%, Manganese 1.2%, Silicon 0.30%, Chromium 0.50% and Vanadium 0.15%.

Din 2379 Consolidates maximum wear resistance, great durability, exceptional front line maintenance, and treating resistance 12 % ledeburitic chromium steel. It can be nitrided after special heat treatment. It can be utilized as threading rolls and dies, icy trimming, cutting and stamping tools for sheet thickness’s up to 6 mm, accuracy cutting instruments for sheet thicknesses up to 12 mm.

Hardening

O1 steels should be heated uniformly to 780-820°C (1436-1508°F) until completely heated through. If needed, the steels can be preheated at 300-500°C (572-932°F). About 30 min/per 25 mm of the ruling section is to be provided and then the steels should be immediately quenched in oil.

Forging Properties

Forging of Ohns O1 steels can be performed at 1038°C (1900°F) down to 857°C (1575°F) but not below 816°C (1550°F).

Welding

The Oil Hardening Non-Shrinking (OHNS) die steel refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited for making tools. Though these steels are weldable, there is a risk of crack formation. But, this can be avoided with convinced specifications like preheating, proper choice of the electrode, etc., In the present work, OHNS die steel is welded with three different electrodes. The chosen electrodes were mild steel electrode, E312-16 chromium-based electrode, and E-NiCrFe-3 nickel-based electrode. The OHNS steel is welded with these three electrodes and the welded specimens were examined for hot cracking tendency and mechanical properties of the joint. The hot cracking tendency was assessed by Houldcroft’s weldability test (Fishbone test). All three electrodes proved good results in terms of hot crack resistance and the specimen welded with E312-16 chromium-based electrode provides good mechanical properties.

Tempering

Tempering of O1 steels is performed at 177-260°C (350-500°F) to realize Rockwell C hardness of 62 to 57.

Normalizing

After normalizing hardness is 40 HRC given on the Rockwell testing machine. It shows after normalizing the specimen becomes harder the annealing specimen, this is due to the formation of Bainite & Martensite.

Machinability

The machinability of O1 steels is very good with a rating of 90% that of water hardening low alloy steels. The optimum parameters of turning operation of OHNS Steel plates were spindle speed 1500 RPM, feed rate 0.06 mm, and depth of cut 1 mm. However OHNS Steel plate having good machinability characteristic and Produce reasonable surface finish. Spindle speed is a dominating parameter of the machining time turning process.
